Broadly, I am interested in the following research areas: law and politics in China, public policy, policy implementation, central-local relations, and soft law governance in China.

The title of my current research project is: Personal information, digital economy, and national security: Investigating the role of China in the global data governance. The project is funded by S.C. Van Fonden.

Short description of the current project:

The global data governance is now faced with the task to look for a delicate balance among protecting personal information, developing digital economy, and maintaining national security. China, as the second largest digital economy and the most populated country in the world, is going to shape the global data governance considerably. Indeed, it is widely expected that the recent adoption of the Cybersecurity Law, Data Security Law, and Personal Information Protection Law, will have a significant impact on both domestic and international businesses, research collaborations, etc.

This project will investigate China as a case of the changing global data governance. It will study both the domestic and international aspects of China’s data governance. First, it will focus on the domestic implementation and enforcement of the newly adopted Personal Information Protection Law, in order to understand China’s approaches to balance personal data protection, digital economy, and national security. In addition, it will investigate the impact of China’s data governance regime on international businesses and research collaborations, as well as on the data governance frameworks built up at international bodies, such as WTO and UN.
