Prayer

Prayer is an inherently social phenomenon. Prayer is social in the sense that it is directed towards others, real or imagined. Prayer can be regarded as brief or extended communicative verbal expressions directed, which not just state things as they are but supposedly also how they could be changed to be. As such, prayers are within the sphere of performative language use. Prayer may in this sense map affect and care; that what is of concern is indexed in prayer. It is therefore also possible to hone in on the affective charge prayers and praying bring about. Praying may here relate to moral ideals as well as notions of intent and sincerity, and they may frequently operate on and by premised by love and affection.
